ISO 9001 consulting

ISO 9001 is the basis of almost all modern quality management systems.

Without quality management, nothing works in many industries today. First and foremost, of course, are the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, two sectors that have always promoted and advanced quality management. Without the appropriate certifications, there are hardly any entry opportunities for suppliers and partners today. ISO 9001 still represents the basis of all modern QM standards. It defines the most fundamental processes and measures, and its High Level Structure serves as a fixed standard for almost all new and revised standards.

Quality management with ISO 9001

Quality management is never a single and completed process. The division into tasks of organizational planning, operational planning, and control and evaluation is a constantly repeating cycle with the goal of truly continuous adaptation and improvement. ISO 9001 consulting must take this into account individually and, at best, intervene as little as possible in already established processes. Rather, it should lead to the process participants becoming more aware of their specific tasks and also independently exploiting optimization potential. The sometimes high documentation effort, which is of course also often perceived as a nuisance for many participants, is a necessary evil here. After all, without precise documentation, evaluations and follow-up measures based on them are difficult to implement in practice. As with so many other topics, digitalization is the great hope here. It should make it possible to minimize the time-consuming and resource-intensive side effects of quality management systems in practice. Automated documentation, remote audits and standardized interfaces are therefore some of the particularly important topics of comprehensive ISO 9001 consulting.

Advantages of ISO 9001 consulting

ISO 9001 consulting and certification today have various advantages. Whereas in the past the issue of cost savings almost exclusively dominated the targeted objectives, today many other "soft" advantages have been added. In a globalized economic cycle, for example, it has become important to reconcile quality standards. Quality specifications for suppliers must at least correspond to the company's own in order to maintain the desired quality. Strong competitive pressure also makes it important to be able to provide clear evidence that one has adhered to established conventions in the event of accusations or even lawsuits. Last but not least, building trust with customers and market participants is more important today than ever before. With the proof of quality-technically correct procedures, one advertises both with customers and partners for firm confidence. Quality management with ISO 9001 and standards based on it has also become an important marketing factor today.

Even if in the long term internal know-how must always be created in quality management, one can hardly do without external help when introducing or optimizing quality management systems (QMS). What counts in ISO 9001 consulting is ultimately the translation of theoretical knowledge into practical application with the appropriate experience. In particular, it is important to have a technical background in the respective industry, but to lead this technical view already automatically with a quality-technical view. Especially in the technical disciplines, quality as a benchmark is usually based on precisely measurable parameters. However, it takes a lot of practical experience to be able to define these parameters in a really suitable way.

Possible disadvantages of ISO 9001 certification

Not only ISO 9001 consulting itself costs money, but also its "consequences". Effective quality management cannot be had free of charge to begin with, but it can of course be focused on ensuring that payback effects are also achieved quickly. Especially with holistic approaches, the chances for this are good. Many people see ISO 9001 certification as just a tedious mandatory task that has to be fulfilled - because partners or even legal requirements demand it. However, those who understand quality management with ISO 9001 as an integral part of their business philosophy and who "live" quality management throughout, will ultimately enjoy all its advantages and reduce the disadvantages of ISO certification.

While it is often easy to establish QM systems from the very beginning in start-up companies, it is often necessary to fight for acceptance in established companies. Established - but of course also proven - processes are often reluctantly abandoned here. QM is often seen here as a kind of quality bureaucracy, which primarily requires more effort and does not always deliver visible results for the individual. Here it is particularly important to take into account the individual initial situation during an ISO 9001 consultation.
